A: The HSC BOD shares members concern for privacy and restricting personal information - particularly aggregated information such as our membership data base (See HSC Privacy Policy). Currently, HSC has not implemented a https (secure socket layer topology) as all information currently requested by HSC is easily obtained from public sources elsewhere on the web; public records; or a little investigative research.
We do not collect social security numbers, drivers license numbers, government badge numbers; or financial information of any kind to include bank account numbers, or credit card numbers. At such time that we require that information we will implement "https:"; however, I suspect that even with on-line purchases within the HSC web we will implement a third part agent like Pay Pal or some other transaction service similarly as we do now for dues.
Web accounts using https are doing so, I suspect, not because of your telephone number or address, but because of other information that is being requested AND associated with those items of information.
Currently our data base is restricted to registered users (HSC members) only; then only limited records are viewable at any given time; then limited information is available. It is easier to obtain this information from newsletters, data base files and other communicaitons shared among members then to obtain this information on the web.
I hope this provide some insight to our web security. You may check similar ski club web sites or social web site (Face Book, Twitter, and My Space) to gain some assurance that we are complying with best business practices or better. If you check web sites that require a transaction then you are directed to an "https:" web page to input sensitive information. If you feel strongly about this issue please continue to express your concerns and provide added information to ensure your BOD is aware of this need.
